Effect[]
Shields are used to absorb direct damage taken equal to the caster's Max HP (unless stated otherwise).
Debuffs such as 
Shields Blocked and 
Zap will dispel Shields and prevent them from applying.

Hit Shield[]
Hit Shields will block direct damage a certain amount of times, being considerably useful to the caster if damage taken is mainly from single instances. They are unaffected by Shields Blocked and Zap.
Indirect damage such as Periodic Damage debuffs ignore these entirely.
