  • Innate magic in dessert creatures
This article is about the phenomenon in Cookie Run: Kingdom lore. For the Cookie type, see Magic Cookies.

Magic fuels many of the common aspects of life and events in Cookie Run: Kingdom. Earthbread itself is at its core a magical land—its edible denizens could not exist without their world's innate magic, as they are brought to life through the means of spells and magical ingredients. This magical existence could very well be what grants them the inherent ability to wield magic in such a wide variety of ways (in multiple other realities, it is even clear that something as simple as emotions hold mystical might for the Cookies).

Source of Magic[]

The source of magic as a concept is utterly unknown, though it seems to be an innate part of the world, woven into existence itself. The Witches seemed to not trouble themselves with the thought of the unknown, with their practice of magic being carefree and based solely on creativity. The Wizards however saught the hidden truth behind the very existence of magics and the perfect methods to practice them. Unfortunately, many of their findings remain secret to Cookies and players alike.

The source of the practice of magic is also shrouded in mystery, though some hints are given. In the distant past, the Head Icon Fount of Knowledge was told to have brought knowledge of magic to Cookiekind.[1] It is lightly implied that the forms of magic he taught—and were thus likely the first forms of magic to be practiced by the Cookies of Earthbread—were Nature Magic and Dark Moon Magic.[2] It is of course also clear that magic was practiced before this time by Witches, but in what form and how is unknown. The other major forms of magic have unclear origins in their practice, though White Magic was likely first established by the Cookies of the Vanilla Kingdom. Some more recent derivative forms of magic have much clearer origins, such as Coffee Magic and Latte Magic being founded by Espresso Cookie and Latte Cookie.

Practice of Magic[]

Magic can be channeled as a method of extending one's abilities and as tools assisting in combat, medicine, art, and technology. This is most visible in Cookies, though the magic arts are available by default to any dessert creature and can seemingly be practiced by any being at all. Though the sub-categorizations of magic types on Earthbread and beyond are innumerable, five main arcane arts exist. Specific, less broadly-performed magic types are derived from these.

While all magic requires great knowledge and effort to master, it also requires at least some innate ability. While the majority of Cookies are born with some level of magic innately within them, some are not, such as Head Icon Prune Juice Cookie. This leaves them unable to practice true magic regardless of effort, though they are still able to utilize magical instruments or materials such as potions.

Arcane Arts[]

White Magic[]

White Magic
A school of magic that draws its power from celestial bodies emanating light, such as the full moon. White Magic is often associated with healing powers, but adepts of this school can effectively attack their foes and protect themselves using the light itself. This magic is considered cold and pristine, and its energy is of the colors white, cyan, or light yellow.
The Art of Cookie Run: Kingdom, page 22

White Magic (Korean: 백마법, baegmabeob) is explicitly connected to the Vanilla Kingdom and its founder, Head Icon Pure Vanilla Cookie, the art's one true master.[3][4] Consequently, White Magic plays a large (though quiet) role in the Crème Republic, though with shifted priorities in its usage. While the Vanilla Kingdom has magichanical prowess in its own right as seen with its Wafflebots, the Crème Republic forgoes White Magic's folk healing roots in favor of an entirely engineering-focused approach to great success.

Known Users[]

Dark Moon Magic[]

Dark Moon Magic
A school of magic that depends on the light of the crescent moon. As the crescent is imminent to become the full moon and back, White and Dark Moon Magic share an inseparable bond. An adept of this school must show extreme caution when dealing with its treacherous energy as its source lies on the dark side of the moon. Dark Moon Magic is most potent during the crescent phases, but requires the highest price of the user in return, Like White Magic, this magic is cold and usually associated with the colors dark blue and purple.
The Art of Cookie Run: Kingdom, page 22

Dark Moon Magic (Korean: 다크문마법, dakumunmabeob), sometimes referred to as Crescent Moon Magic (Korean: 그믐달 마법, gumumdal mabeob),[6][7] is a forbidden and therefore rarely practiced school of magic. It is a dangerous art generally relegated to only the most powerful of beings like the primordial Witches[8]—it is very rare for even the Ancient Heroes to use such magic, and its employment is only resorted to when absolutely necessary.

Castle in the sky cutscene 1

Head Icon Pure Vanilla Cookie in the Dark Side of the Moon

Though its true potential is obfuscated in canon, it is capable of both sealing and releasing deadly entities as seen with Head Icon Pure Vanilla Cookie's banishment of Head Icon Dark Enchantress Cookie (and himself)[7] and with Head Icon White Lily Cookie's chaos laid upon the Blueberry Yogurt Academy respectively.[9] It is connected to the Moonstone, an artifact with the power to transport individuals across the world or even outside of it; a small piece of the Moonstone was gifted to White Lily Cookie by Head Icon Elder Faerie Cookie for use in returning to the Faerie Kingdom, and Dark Enchantress Cookie/White Lily Cookie was sealed in the main body of the Moonstone through Pure Vanilla Cookie's use of Dark Moon Magic.

Dark Moon Magic draws its power from and allows access to the Dark Side of the Moon, an area whose name is both literal in that it is the posterior face of the moon and figurative in that it is a void-like, mysterious "other-realm." This space is where Pure Vanilla Cookie and Dark Enchantress Cookie/White Lily Cookie were held after the climax of the Dark Flour War, the latter being transported through the Moonstone;[8] in fact, it is said that the Moonstone comes from the Dark Side of the Moon.[10] Head Icon Shadow Milk Cookie appears to have a kinship with the Dark Side of the Moon, being able to warp its nullity to torture the trapped Pure Vanilla Cookie in any way he pleased and even calling it his home.[11]

Despite its name, it is unclear if Head Icon Moonlight Cookie uses Dark Moon Magic or has relation to its source. Moonlight Cookie has mentioned the Dark Side of the Moon, though as a metaphor for her lack of understanding towards the City of Wizards's past;[12] still, such conveys that she is unfamiliar with the other-realm.

Black Magic[]

{{{alt 1}}}
Unlike other schools of magic that rely on the moon and celestial bodies, this magic draws upon the cosmic void. Black Magic is a diametrical opposite of White Magic. Its adepts often twist and warp the energies of other magic schools to gain truly dangerous powers. Such abilities include mind control, hexes, or means to manipulate the very principles of nature.
The Art of Cookie Run: Kingdom, page 23

Black Magic (Korean: 흑마법, hugmabeob) is the most "evil" of the arcane arts, being used only by those associated with the Darkness. While White Magic and Dark Moon Magic are bound in their similar energy sources, Black Magic is the true opposite of White Magic.

Notably, the cut character Crimson Moon Acolite is displayed alongside the description of Black Magic in The Art of Cookie Run: Kingdom.

Nature Magic[]

{{{alt 1}}}
This elemental magic is used by nature's spirits, fairies, and beasts. Peaceful entities usually call to the elements of Grass, Water, and Wind for protection, while destructive beings can wield the powers of Fire or Earth.
The Art of Cookie Run: Kingdom, page 23

Nature Magic (Korean: 자연계마법, jayeongyemabeob) is emblematic of the Guardians of Nature—they are the masters of this magic and the very thing it is drawn from. Its practice is crucial in maintaining the world's flow of Life Energy. It is a primal, elemental form of magic, practiced by various creatures under the order of the embodiments of the world and this magic. Due to Nature Magic's primal elemental nature, it is one of the most broad forms of magic with many assumed practitioners.

This form of magic is seen to be present in some capacity in all realms of the Cookie World. In one parallel reality, there are other elements which may be associated with this magic if it were to be in their world.

Dessert Magic[]

Dessert Magic
This peculiar school of magic springs from the delightfulness of sugars, creams, and chocolates. The greater and tastier the dessert, the more potent the magic energy. Adepts of Dessert Magic strive to make the world a happier place through the evocation of the brightest emotions.
Since ancient times, there were four main schools of magic. These days, however, every wizard is trying to invent something new. Here, in Parfaedia, we call these new practices "dessert magic". The problem with dessert magic is that the more diverse it becomes, the more diverse the accidents become!

Dessert Magic (Korean: 디저트마법, dijeotumabeob) has strong ties to Parfaedia, the city being its birthplace.[20] Dessert Magic is the youngest of the arcane arts, being created by Cookies in the modern era for their own uses rather than endowed upon them by the world since the land's inception.[21] This art is far more varied than the others, being defined by diversity; its base power is derived from the Cookie practitioners' innate magic rather than from an outside source,[22] and it can be "flavored" by any food, though sweets are mostly used.

Dessert Magic's main capabilities lie in the creation of either food or objects/energy built with food. Notably, Dessert Magic is the only arcane art not highlighted in The Art of Cookie Run: Kingdom.

Derivatives of the Arcane Arts[]

The arcane arts—especially Dessert Magic—are broad enough in their definitions that subcategories of magic practice can be drawn from them.

Light Magic[]

Cookie0511-interaction

Head Icon Madeleine Cookie channeling the Divines' grace into Light Magic

Light Magic (Korean: 빛 마법, bich mabeob) is a versatile form of magic often used in battle for both defense and offense. It has a distinct religious dimension which resembles Christianity; its practitioners worship a heavenly force known as "the Divine" to which they owe Light Magic's capabilities and overall existence.

It is a derivative of White Magic heavily associated with the Crème Republic and is in this way an evolution of the Vanilla Kingdom's traditional White Magic practices. Its usage and belief are pervasive in the Republic's culture; Light Magic is most associated with the Vanillian race of Crème Republicans, therefore so too is it representative of the Republic's most privileged, ruling demographic and the nation's failings in Vanillian-Sea Cookie equality. The political power of Light Magic is reinforced through facilities like the Crème Knights Paladin Academy and frequent religious installations like chapels across the Republican land, both of which teach of the righteousness of the Divines. This form of sorcery's implicit ties to oppression are enhanced through Light Magic's association with purity and giftedness. Head Icon Strawberry Crepe Cookie's analysis of Head Icon Madeleine Cookie's dough found that he held "light energy," which allows him to perform Light Magic;[23] this perhaps suggests that one must contain light energy beforehand or be given such by the Divines to be qualified for performing Light Magic at all.

One very vocal dissident of Light Magic is Head Icon Espresso Cookie. He is not afraid to state his thoughts on it being a useless "hindrance" inferior to Coffee Magic, though it is possible that these opinions stem too from his background of growing up in the Crème Republic's Choco Mud Town, the home of the nation's lower class, impoverished demographic. While Espresso Cookie once compared the use of milk in Coffee Magic to Light Magic, it should be noted that this scene's English localization differs largely from its Korean text—Light Magic is not mentioned at all in this moment in the original script.[24]

Restoration Magic[]

Healer Cookie mending a Villager's wounds with Restoration Magic

Restoration Magic (Korean: 회복 마법, hoebog mabeob) is a derivative of White Magic taught at the Vanilla Kingdom's Magic Academy by Head Icon Pure Vanilla Cookie. First mentioned in Cookie Odyssey, it focuses on healing both in Cookies and in objects, being able to restore raisins into ripe grapes. When performed, it is required that the caster focuses their mind on their care for the target and its innate preciousness.

Pomegranate Magic[]

Ancient altar cutscene 1

Tainted Pomegranate Magic in action

Pomegranate Magic (Korean: 석류 주술, seoglyu jusul, "Pomegranate Incantation") is a form of magic largely related to Head Icon Pomegranate Cookie and eponymous in Pomegranate Cookie's Skill icon Pomegranate Magic Skill. When utilized by her, it is a derivative of Black Magic, though it more resembles Nature Magic when used by those members of the Pomegranate Village with good intentions.

Though practiced and cultivated by one mere priestess, Pomegranate Cookie's form of Pomegranate Magic is an art not to be underestimated. It is capable of temporarily incapacitating or corrupting even the strongest of Nature's guardians and Soul Jam holders like the Sugar Swan, Head Icon Millennial Tree Cookie, and Head Icon Dark Cacao Cookie, frying their minds into violent incomprehension or reducing their power. A crimson poison, it is able to rot land in both its flora and fauna.

Tainted forest cutscene pomegranate village

Traditional Pomegranate Magic practitioners of the Pomegranate Village

More traditional, purer Pomegranate Magic conversely deals with balance and spiritual appeasement in Nature. It draws power from the forest in which it is practiced while being diligent in returning the favor by tending to its denizens; indeed, base Pomegranate Magic is more akin to religion and involves spirituality more than most known types of magic. Even the forest's own non-sentient creatures are able to utilize Pomegranate Magic, exemplifying the strong connection it has to the earth. So too does it act as a counterbalance to its evil derivative and other forms of magic corruption, as it is capable of purification and sealing evil energies.

Something of note is Pomegranate Magic's Korean name (석류 주술, seoglyu jusul); it uses the term 주술 (jusul), or incantation, while almost all other forms of magic in Cookie Run: Kingdom employ 마법 (mabeob), meaning magic. This difference casts Pomegranate Magic in a more traditional (albeit occult) light, a trait fitting in that the Pomegranate Village's Cookies' inspiration is a blend of the Korean Mu and Japanese Shinto. Like these traditions, it is deeply connected to the earth and the spirits which roam it.

Crimson Moon Magic[]

Crimson Moon Magic is less a form of magic to be performed and more the manifestations of the Crimson Moon itself. The Crimson Moon is an entity tied to Black Magic[26] known to be capable of summoning aggressive monsters; it is the cause of the Wafflebots which would attack the Abandoned Village before Head Icon Pure Vanilla Cookie's return to power in Castle in the Sky.[27] A malevolent force, it appears to be worshipped and channeled in occult manners as exemplified by the Crimson Moon Acolite and the Crimson Moon's Magic Rune kingdom obstacle.

Faerie Magic[]

Faerie Magic (Korean: 요정 [쿠키]의 마법, yojeong [kuki]-ui mabeob, "Faeries'/Faerie Cookies' Magic") is an unconfirmed form of magic said to be performed by only Faerie Cookies. This magic is mentioned only by Head Icon Wizard Cookie in reference to all that the Faeries are able to accomplish which Cookies cannot—their "secrets"—like extended age and the materialization of otherwise-hidden objects. Regardless of Faerie Magic's unconfirmed status as a proper magic sub-category, the Faeries' close connection to nature implies that their abilities are closely tied to Nature Magic.

Coffee Magic[]

Odyssey espresso cookies lab

Head Icon Espresso Cookie's laboratory, where Coffee Magic is honed

Coffee Magic (Korean: 커피마법, keopimabeob) is a school of magic emblematic of Head Icon Espresso Cookie. A type of Dessert Magic, Coffee Magic was pioneered and perfected through dizzyingly long lengths of development by Espresso Cookie and matches its creator's precise and unforgiving nature. Indeed, Coffee Magic is more like an exact science which requires careful measuring and preparation to be performed well, even being done through the use of lab equipment. This form of magic utilizes and generates heat alongside coffee beans similar to the real-life process of coffee bean roasting. Due to the smoke often made as a byproduct of Coffee Magic's heat and its overall dark colors, many figures in-universe falsely assume Coffee Magic is a form of Black Magic.[28]

Though Espresso Cookie was Coffee Magic's primary inventor, Head Icon Latte Cookie has also been credited in its development.[29] She would go on to develop Latte Magic, her own offshoot of Dessert Magic which is derivative of Coffee Magic.

Latte Magic[]

Cookie0516-personal1

Head Icon Latte Cookie creating a Latte Glyph

Latte Magic (Korean: 라떼마법, lattemabeob) is a type of sorcery which is special in that it derives from two types of magic: the broad Dessert Magic classification, and Head Icon Espresso Cookie's Coffee Magic. It was created by Head Icon Latte Cookie after her assistance in developing Coffee Magic,[29] and much like the two magics' creators, it is similar to its predecessor but holds a few differences in its core characteristics. Latte Magic begins its departure from Coffee Magic the moment the second of its two main ingredients is introduced to its coffee base: clarifying, mild milk. Due to this neutralizing ingredient, Latte Magic is far more forgiving than Coffee Magic, and intentionally so: its inventor presents it more like an art form than an exact science. As she says, "in a word, the absence of the formula becomes the formula."

Latte Magic is markedly beginner friendly and its potency depends on the performer's emotional investment and their care for aesthetics. It heavily employs glyphs when being cast, though it has no single "correct" glyph.[30] All Latte Glyphs are formed through the combination of Milk Glyphs and Coffee Glyphs,[31] but the appearance of a Latte Glyph can vary greatly based on the user's tastes.

Jelly Magic (Korean: 젤리마법, jellimabeob) is a derivative of Dessert Magic attributed to and used by Head Icon Cream Puff Cookie. It exemplifies Dessert Magic's abilities in creation, being used to form Jellies and other sweet treats from thin air. Based on Cream Puff Cookie's struggles in controlling it, it appears to be a wild and dynamic form of sorcery. Jelly Magic's name is mentioned only through Cream Puff Cookie and Head Icon Strawberry Crepe Cookie's kingdom interaction; otherwise, Cream Puff Cookie's form of magic tends to be labeled as merely Dessert Magic.

Weaving Magic[]

Weaving shop background 2

Granola Cookie's Weaving Magic laboratory

Weaving Magic (Korean: 합성 마법, habseong mabeob, "Synthesis Magic") is a type of magic invented and solely used by Granola Cookie. Its flashy, pyrotechnic-filled nature is not just for show, as it can be used to synthesize Icings for Head Icon MyCookie (and cause collateral damage). Similar to Coffee Magic, it is presented in the lens of science practiced with vials and complicated equipment rather than traditional magic done with spells and runes.

While little is known in depth on Weaving Magic's lore—it exists in a meta sense merely as set dressing for the Weaving Shop game mechanic—it can be comfortably classified as a form of Dessert Magic. Evidence of this lies in its main purpose and use: the synthesis of objects. Like all Dessert Magic, this is done in Weaving Magic using food-based ingredients, those being Sugar Coat Fabric and Honey Floss. Furthermore, like many subsets of Dessert Magic, Weaving Magic was invented by Granola Cookie and is primarily used by its creator.

Other Magics[]

"Transformation Magic"[]

"Transformation Magic" is a concept mentioned exclusively in the City of Wizards's Archives of Magic.

The moon is the very source of Transformation Magic... Perpetually changing its phases and luminosity, hiding itself behind the veil of nightly darkness.

While this seems like something which could correlate with Dark Moon Magic, a look at Cookie Run: Kingdom's original Korean text confirms that this is a notion not intended to be present.

달은 변신의 귀재... 달의 힘은 한 달 내내 얼굴을 바꾸며 사라졌나 하면 차오르고, 환하게 빛나다가도 어둠 속으로 몸을 숨기는 변화의 마법이다.

Machine translation: The moon is a master of transformation... The power of the moon is a magic of change that changes its face throughout the month, disappearing and rising, shining brightly and then hiding itself in the darkness.

It can be seen in this original quote that, according to the Wizards, the moon merely utilizes magic in general to change its faces, not that it presents a specific form of magic in doing so.

Moonlight/Dream Magic[]

Moonlight Magic and Dream Magic (Korean: 달빛의 힘이, dalbich-ui him-i, "Power of Moonlight") are synonyms for one type of sorcery mentioned by Head Icon Milky Way Cookie and Head Icon Wizard Cookie. While the English localization of Cookie Run: Kingdom formats its name(s) as a proper magic subset, the original Korean text does not do the same. Instead, it uses a more generic term to indicate that this concept refers to all that which Head Icon Moonlight Cookie is capable of doing or which her cosmic essence is used to accomplish, or "the Moonlight's powers."

In various statements by the Wizards, they make references to the moon and the night being a source for this magic[32], making Moonlight Cookie the personification of it and the source of it. It is possible that Dream Magic is a form of Nature Magic and/or Dark Moon Magic considering this and Moonlight's role, though no such connection is ever truly addressed or implied in-lore.

Despite Moonlight being most referenced in regards to this art of magic, she is not the only one who presents powers clearly linked to the moon, the night, and the dream. Conductors of the trains used to ferry the unconscious spirits of beings in the universe to and from their dreams—among other entities born of dreams—seem to have innate powers which use this magic. The World of Dreams itself is in a sense reliant on this magic and is seemingly changed to fit the unconcious minds, thoughts, and ideas of dreamers using this mystic power.

Music[]

Musical performance has inherent mystical qualities in the Cookie World. The sound of music can invoke a wide range of powers, including healing, damaging, cleansing the soul, influencing willpower, and enhancing abilities. Despite all the power music holds, it is never formally noted as a type of magic.

The magical properties of music are seen throughout all known dimensions of the Cookie World.
